Llama's
The tall long neck brigade. Llamas are the most amazing animals - so intelligent, inquisitive, so relational they're almost dog like. They have been bred traditionally in South America to be man's companion work animal. There they provide fibre, transport and food. Here in NZ we use them for fibre and packing - how wonderful not to have to carry that huge pack, but to have someone carry it for you! Llamas really do want to know you and to be your friend.
Alpaca's
The shorter long neck brigade. Alpacas produce the crème - de - la - crème of the fibre world. Baby alpaca fibre is so fine and soft, with no prickle factor. Bred for centuries for their valuable fibre, these inquisitive, exotic looking creatures are more cat like in their personality. Generally a little more skittish than the llamas, alpaca boys still make good pets and the girls are wonderful mums. And yes - you can put a pack on an alpaca, but being a lot smaller than the llamas, don't expect it to carry much more than your packed lunch!
